Shavings and the rocking horse
Puppet Theater of Ivano Rota
TRUCIOLO and THE RIDING HORSE.
Puppet show, for all
Thursday, May 25, 5:00 p.m. - Rocca Brancaleone
by and with Ivano Rota
In an old workshop in Brianza, a carpenter of great craft and his apprentice Truciolo, instead of making tables and cabinets one day decided to build a rocking horse. In this perhaps there was nothing strange, except that for this ancient game they used as wood a particular board: it came from the same plant from which a certain Pinocchio was built. Now if you think of all the mischief that the famous puppet has made us witness and into how many fantastic worlds he has introduced us to, you can well understand how something similar to Pinocchio, that rocking horse had to have, at least in character if not in appearance, if indeed his own body was made of the same wood from which that rascal was built. In fact, by riding it Truciolo will be taken to wonderful and different worlds ready to take anyone with him who wants to. Unfortunately for our friendly hero, an ugly witch will bring him back down to earth, turning the horse back into the original piece of wood. When it seems all is lost with the triumphant witch, here comes the twist: thanks to the imagination of our little spectators, called upon to intervene to bring the piece of wood back to life, and thanks to Truciolo's "providential" thrashings, the fate of the story will change.
Ivano Rota completes humanistic studies, challenges industrialization and mass culture, is part of the political movement of '77, which had so much influence in alternative culture in Italy, particularly of the Metropolitan Indians, the creative area. At 16 he joined Operation Mato Grosso, which works and advocates for the poor in South America. He then wants to be a writer and attends numerous creative writing courses in Milan. He feeds on underground culture. He writes short stories, novels and plays. In his late 30s, thanks to his children, he discovers figure theater, sculpture and painting, which he will pursue as a self-taught artist. In the early 2000s he has his first public recognitions. At the theatrical level, one of his puppet characters named "Truciolo," for whom he writes and stages numerous adventures, is hired by the Municipal Council of his town, Cantù, as the town's official mask-burattino. On an artistic level, he makes solo exhibitions, in Val d'Orcia, Como, Cantù and several towns in the Como and Milan areas, and to participate in numerous group exhibitions, in Venice, Bologna and Milan. He makes monumental works in wood, clay, gasbeton and iron. An 8-meter-high wooden and iron Pinocchio was placed in the center of the city of Cantù. He has participated with his art of denunciation and protest in several world strikes against climate change, through performances in Piazza del Duomo in Milan and at Castello Sforzesco, which were filmed by newspapers and television stations in many countries.
