Traveling. Stories and visions from the Performing Arts Families to the workshop "Garzoni"
Convegno di Studi
A cura dell’Istituto per i Beni Marionettistici e il Teatro popolare di Grugliasco, l’Università La Sapienza di Roma e il Museo La casa delle Marionette
In May 2019 the project In Viaggio. Storie e visioni dalle Famiglie d'Arte di spettacolo (Journey. Stories and visions from the Famiglie d'Arte di Spettacolo), a conference held on 23 May in the Sala dell'Autorità Portuale in Ravenna, which gave rise to a very intense day, where the testimonies of many of the Famiglie d'Arte di Teatro (Theatre Art Families) still in activity or guardians of the heritage of entire generations came together. It was like opening a precious and fantastic treasure chest that traverses the history of the peninsula from north to south, from west to east: marionettes, puppets and puppeteers, with their most diverse variations, represent a specific and entirely Italian excellence. Three languages of theatre, three very different ways of conceiving the show, but with many points of contact and peculiarities dictated by the cultural, geographical and political contexts in which the three genres were born and spread. That first conference turned out to be an invaluable survey, a door literally thrown wide open on a non-museum history of theatre that is still very much alive and pulsating. It should not be forgotten that the Italian Families of Art dedicated to figure theatre are the oldest in Europe, in some cases dating back to the end of the 18th century.
It goes without saying that a lot of curiosity and questions arose. What does it mean to be an Art Family today? What is the weight of tradition? How has the repertoire and production methods changed? What is the difference between the Families of Art of the 19th century and those born in the 20th century? How are Art Families created and defined? What role can Art Families play in the transmission of knowledge to younger generations? How can we preserve, protect and valorise this strong but very fragile intangible heritage, which the world envies us and which risks disappearing inexorably? There are so many questions to be answered that continuing the research was both necessary and necessary. In 2021, the study continued with the collection of further interviews with artists still working. And in this 2022, the dialogue will be reopened in two areas: the continuation of the survey on the Italian Families of Art of Figure Theatre and the opening of a new look at the so-called "garzoni di bottega": on the transmission of knowledge from master to pupil. A complex apprenticeship, sometimes indirect, made up of tenacity and sacrifices, stolen words and silences, hard work and great passion.
