The Golden Poet. The grand imaginary theater of Giuliano Scabia
by Massimo Marino, published by La Casa Usher
meeting curated by Marco Sciotto
in collaboration with Ravenna Teatro
Wednesday, May 24, 6 p.m. - Rasi Theater, Foyer
Massimo Marino's volume tells the story and works of Giuliano Scabia (1935-2021), an extraordinary poet, playwright, storyteller and storyteller between the 20th century and today. Since the early 1960s Scabia has broken the canons of the theatrical tradition, dilating the stage, practicing a participatory theater that has gone into asylums, mountain and lowland towns, suburbs and historic city centers, and international festivals. Scabia also played a very important role in Franco Basaglia's actions in the 1970s, which led to the closure of the old asylums with Law 180 of 1978. In fact he brought to Trieste his idea of Teatro Vagante, which meets and involves the public in the streets and squares. Together with inpatients in the Trieste Psychiatric Hospital, he gave birth to the Marco Cavallo. He is a large papier-mâché animal, which on a sunny Sunday went out into the streets of Trieste accompanied by an enthusiastic and invincible procession of "madmen," doctors, nurses, volunteers, students, and residents of Trieste in a big party. He taught for more than 30 years at Dams in Bologna, putting texts and theatrical conventions to the test in his courses (the book Stairway and Path to Paradise, published posthumously in 2021 by La casa Usher, documents this journey). He is the author of numerous theatrical, poetic and narrative works, most of them published by Einaudi.
